When I learned that the award-winning talk show host Larry King and his wife, entertainer and entrepreneur Shawn King, were bringing out , a line of bed and bath products, I was, well, surprised. Sheets, towels, robes, and scented candles wouldn't have been my first guess as the most obvious way to license the King name. But to hear the couple talk about their new venture, you think, why not?
The Kings, who love to travel—and travel well—have often bought bedding and towels from the five-star hotels in which they've stayed. Then they met Walter Pelaez, the CEO of , a premier supplier of luxury bath and bedding products to the hospitality industry. When Pelaez told the Kings that it was his company that made the products they'd so often taken home with them, a celebrity collaboration was born.
Sleep Like a King's line ranges from 700-thread-count white sheets you'd see at most top hotels to a 400-thread-count sateen version in seductive shades like rose, dusk, and sage. There are baby alpaca throws, towels named after the Kings' favorite destinations (London, Beverly Hills, Rome), and scented candles bearing the names of exotic places like Athens, Tahiti and Saint-Tropez.
"I closed my eyes and thought, this reminds of a scent I smelled in France or Italy, or Bangkok," Shawn says. (Thailand was her first big trip abroad, as a teenage backup singer for the Osmonds—"an eye-opening experience for a girl raised in the music business in Studio City, California," she adds.)
Shawn, who still has her school home-economics certificate, says she loves nothing more than the creature comforts, and her husband concurs. "It's like you were made for this," he says. Larry also reveals that when he was a boy, he told his best friend that he wanted to be "in sheets and pillowcases."
