CS: In the case of a fire (heaven forbid!) what is the one item you'd grab from your closet?
CS: My Balenciaga moto jacket.
ED: Are there any brands that you find yourself loyal to?
CS: Yes. When I’m not on E News, I live in denim. I have been following Michelle Siwy’s designs since I first discovered them. She is now the creative genius behind Wildfox Denim and I must say I am obsessed. I have her distressed, faded boyfriend jeans, the cosmic tie-die wash, a sequin pair, and beyond.
ED: What was your most recent purchase?
CS: I splurged on a white Proenza Schouler Courier bag. I have to be exceptionally careful with it—I'm a makeup addict with a chaotic schedule and two little boys—and it's all white. What was I thinking? Maybe not my smartest purchase to date, but I’m up for the challenge. It’s so beautiful!
ED: You have quite the collection of gorgeous dresses, coats, shirts, and skirts—what are your tips for organizing such special items? What about accessories such as shoes and handbags?
CS: Everything needs a particular place, a home, a designated area within your closet to live. You wouldn’t put your toothbrush in your sock drawer. Same goes for closet organization. I keep my shoes and bags separate from my suits and dresses. I also color code a bit. I have an all black top section, an all white and cream top section, and a prints section. This makes for a more efficient way of getting dressed each day!
ED: Any items on your closet-organizing wish list you care to share?
CS: I currently use black and grey velvet hangers. I do love them, but I think one day I’d like to graduate to all wooden hangers. They seem so sturdy and efficient! As for other items, I’m truly all set. When California Closets came in to custom design my space, we really spent time deciding just how many shelves for shoes, the accurate amount of hanging space and at what height. The island in the middle has created even more storage for me and I’m absolutely in love with my accessories drawer! It’s complete with different compartments for different pieces. I’ve never felt more organized!
ED: How do you deal with clutter?
CS: I think what has worked best for me in recent years has been eliminating clutter from my closet and only holding on to things that I know I will actually wear or that have sentimental value to me. It’s important to purge the excess from your space. If I don’t wear it for more than a year, I donate it. But this has also made me a more clever shopper. I’m less likely now more than ever to buy uber-trendy pieces that I know will have a short shelf life. Shop smart, organize smart, style smart!
ED: What is your favorite piece of decor in your closet?
CS: I like the space rather clean and minimal, but I do have Carine Roitfeld’s book “Irreverent” open on my island most days. She is a chic, edgy, glamorous fashion fixture and the sexy high-styled shots inside are gorg! I’ll flip pages and just leave them open for a few weeks at a time, then flip again for more stimulating inspiriation!
