Considering a move to Canada? This might be the home you've been looking for.
Straddling the border of the United States and Canada, this nearly 7,000 square-foot fixer-upper, built in 1782 and known as the Old Stone Store, comes with its own 24-hour armed security, thanks to border patrol, according to the .
, the current owners are having some trouble selling the house, which is divided into five apartments, because people are wary of living in a home that's directly on the border between Beebe Plain, VT, and Stanstead, Quebec. Current owner Brian DuMoulin and his wife, Joan, are dual citizens of the U.S. and Canada, and they say they've become accustomed to the unique procedures they have to follow.
When Brian inherited the house 40 years ago, he says the border issue wasn't a problem. "In the day, it was a normal and natural thing," he told the . "Now it stresses everyone out."
There is a small granite border marker just outside the front door, and a wired-shut gate in the backyard. The house has entrances from both the U.S. and Canada sides, which means border patrol agents from both countries keep a close watch. Brian said the agents know who the residents are, and as long as they stay on the property, they can pass the border freely. Though things can get a little awkward from time to time — once, when a brand-new Canadian border agent saw Brian and his family standing outside, about 18 feet into the U.S., he told them to report to the Canadian border post.
"If there is an awkwardness, it's that you can't just go this way or this way, you've got to go through [the ports of entry] and then back through," he said. Brian and his wife are ready to leave the border house behind so they can move to Ontario to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
The couple's real estate agent, , said she has been showing the house more and more since a Canadian magazine wrote about its interesting location. So if you want the chance to live in a historical home — that just happens to be in two different countries — act fast!
