Pablo Picasso's stepdaughter Catherine Hutin-Blay has announced that she will be opening the world's largest Picasso museum in the south of France. The news was met with excitement in the art world. Few artists are as prolific and beloved as Pablo Picasso — talented painter and — who achieved the rare feat of becoming a household name during his own lifetime, and is widely considered one of the most influential creatives of the 21st century. However, in this #metoo moment, we can't divorce his talent as a painter from the fact that he notoriously mistreated women, once Françoise Gilot, "Women are machines for suffering."

Hutin-Blay's museum might be just the tonic for contextualizing Picasso's art, because it will be jointly dedicated to the artist and to her mother Jacqueline, and will be called the Musée Jacqueline et Pablo Picasso. Perhaps the museum, set to open in Aix-en-Provence in 2021 with 16,000 square feet of exhibition space and many pieces that have never before been exhibited, will help to lionize Jacqueline as a creative force in her own right. She was, after all, the inspiration and catalyst for great works of art rarely linked to her name, just like so many female muses, to Picasso and to other artists, who came before her.
